Cathedral of St Vincent de Paul (Tunis, Tunisia)

The Cathedral of Tunis was built in 1882 on the site of an earlier catholic cemetery where deceased slaves captured by pirates based in Tunis in the 17th century were buried. St Vincent de Paul, to whom the cathedral is dedicated, was a priest who had himself been sold into slavery in Tunis. Once freed, he tried to improve the condition of slaves in the area. The cathedral, situated between the Avenue Bourguiba and Avenue de France is built in a mix of Byzantine (particularly the dome above the nave), Gothic and North African architectures. Renovated in 1997, it was visited by pope John Paul II in 1998. Masses in French and Italian are still held here, and it is also used for concerts from time to time. The cathedral’s organ is said to be one of the oldest in North Africa.
