Bellapais Abbey (Girne, Cyprus)

The twelfth century Bellapais Abbey is located in the middle of the small village Bellapais on a natural platform on the side of one of the mountains of Beşparmak range - overlooking the city of Girme. It is also known as Abbaye de la Paix or Monastery of Peace. The abbey was founded by Augustinian monks who’d come from Jerusalem although most of what you can see today was built by the Lusignans. After the Ottoman conquest the abbey was given to the Orthodox church. The building later fell in disrepair but has been restored to its former glory. During your visit you can see the remains of the Abbey church, the old cellars, the refectory, its 18 Gothic arches, stone carvings, and more. Of course you can also take a rest under the “tree of idleness” which, together with the abbey, has been been immortalised in the book “Bitter Lemons” by British author Lawrence Durrell who had lived in Bellapais. A free brochure in which you will find information about the abbey and its highlights is available at the tourist office at the entrance. Since 1996 Bellapais Abbey is also host to the annual Bellapais Music Festival and other musical events.
