Begijnhof (Diest, Belgium)

This beguinage was founded in 1253 by Arnold IV and is very well preserved although most of the 90 houses were built during the 17th century. It has 5 large and straight streets separated from the houses by a Baroque portal erected in 1673. The infirmary and the Apostelenconvent nowadays host the Diest cultural centre. Other houses have become artists’ ateliers and some have been converted into private homes for the elderly. It was listed together with other 12 Flemish beguinages as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1998.
