Los Cristianos – popular holiday hotspot in the beautiful Canaries
Located on the south coast of the Canary Island of Tenerife, only a 15-minute drive from Reina Sofia Airport, Los Cristianos has developed over the past few decades from a small fishing village into a very popular tourist destination. The town retains some of its older, traditionally Canarian buildings and has a pedestrianised centre with a good selection of shops. The first tourists to Los Cristianos were from Sweden, who came hoping that the all-year round warm weather would help their medical problems, and as a result the high street is called Avenida de Suecia - Avenue of Sweden.
Golden sandy beaches
The Canary Islands are in a volcanic zone and as a result, some of the beaches have unusual black sand. However, the two beaches in Los Cristianos have soft, golden sand that is great for sunbathing on. The main beach is by the harbour, and it is accompanied by a promenade, shops and places to eat, while the other beach is just five minutes from the town in the next bay. As both of the beaches are close to the compact town, it will not be too far for you to walk there from your hotel. The beaches here are well maintained, and both have good facilities and plenty of sunbeds available to rent. Both are also sheltered from the waves, and as such are good places to enjoy a dip in the warm sea. If you are feeling energetic there are beach sports you can try, and a variety of water sports are available too. Located near the main beach you will find Arona Beach Park. Here there are a range of activities for children to enjoy, including a ball pit, bouncy castle and trampolines. The children can let off some steam here while you can enjoy a drink and relax.
Go and explore
There is a large choice of hotels in Los Cristianos to suit every budget. It may well be that there is lots for you to do at the hotel that you have chosen, but if you want to see more of what the Canary Islands have to offer, you will be best starting at the harbour. The harbour offers a range of activities for holidaymakers, from the chance to spot local marine life on the whale and dolphin watching trips, through to sport fishing and the busy party boats. Furthermore, from here you can catch the ferry which regularly runs to the neighbouring island of La Gomera. In the centre of Tenerife, you can pay a visit to Mount Teide, the symbol of Tenerife and the highest point across Spain and its territories, in Teide National Park. While you can hike up to the summit if you want, a walk which would take you several hours, you can still pay a visit if you are not feeling quite so energetic. A cable car is available which takes visitors up to a height of 3555 metres, above the clouds and only a short distance from the summit.
Entertainment every night
Being a popular holiday destination, Los Cristianos has many cafes, bars and restaurants for you to choose from. Furthermore, there is also a large choice of dining options available, whether it is the traditional local tapas or a whole host of international dishes. Many bars have free entertainment in the evening, ranging from quiet quizzes and bingo through to comedians, singers and bands. If you would like to get up for a song yourself, you are sure to find a karaoke night taking place somewhere in one of the many local pubs and clubs. You do not need to wait until night time to find things to do. If you want a good choice of things to do all under one roof, pay a visit to Passarella Oasis Centro Comercial. This centre is popular day and night with locals as well as tourists. Here, as well as shops and a supermarket, there are cafes and restaurants to relax in. Up on the top floor there is a food court with stalls selling tapas, desserts and drinks, as well as a communal eating and drinking area for enjoying your purchases. Of course, many hotels also offer entertainment and shows, so if your hotel does, you might prefer to stay in.
