The hotel offers a distinctive stay experience, characterized by its seamless self-check-in system and modern, stylishly decorated rooms, complemented by a lively on-site bar. Its prime location near Oulton Broad makes it an excellent choice for short-stay visitors, sightseers, and those attending local events or visiting friends and family. Guests consistently praise the hotel's exceptional cleanliness and the contemporary design of its accommodations. While the vibrant atmosphere is a draw, some rooms can be affected by noise from the busy surroundings. To ensure a comfortable stay, consider requesting a room away from the main road or pub, and be prepared for off-site parking arrangements.
Facilities & Amenities
The on-site bar is a significant draw, described as a lively and modern space with a good atmosphere and a pool table, offering a wide selection of drinks. Guests appreciate the availability of free Wi-Fi, which is generally reliable throughout their stay. Many rooms, particularly the apartments, are equipped with a convenient kitchenette that includes a kettle and fridge, enhancing the comfort for longer visits. Additionally, rooms feature well-regarded TVs and practical amenities such as ironing boards and irons, catering to various guest needs.
Cleanliness & Room Comfort
Guests consistently commend the hotel's exceptional cleanliness, describing rooms as spotless, immaculate, and well-kept, with daily cleaning and fresh towels provided. The modern and stylish decor creates a homely and comfortable ambiance. While many find the beds comfortable and the bedding good quality, some report beds can be hard, lumpy, or squeaky, and some rooms have beds positioned against a wall. Room sizes vary, with some being small or compact but adequate for short stays, while apartments offer more spacious layouts. The showers are highly praised for being powerful and good-sized, though some bathrooms are described as small or cold, and some lack shelves for toiletries. A notable concern is noise levels, particularly from the busy road and loud music from the pub, along with noise from other guests and banging doors. Rooms can also be too warm or have cold bathrooms.
Dining & Food Quality
Most guests note that breakfast is not provided on-site, requiring them to explore local options. While the hotel itself does not feature a full-service restaurant, the on-site bar occasionally offers simple meals like pizza, which guests have found convenient. The hotel's prime location compensates for the lack of on-site dining, as there are numerous nearby restaurants and eateries within easy walking distance. These options provide a wide variety of choices, from casual cafes to more formal dining establishments, ensuring guests can easily find suitable meals throughout their stay.
Location & Accessibility
The hotel boasts an excellent and central location, highly praised for its proximity to Oulton Broad, the river, and the train station. Guests appreciate being within easy walking distance of numerous bars, restaurants, and local amenities, making it ideal for exploring the area. A recurring challenge for guests is parking. There is no dedicated on-site parking, and guests often report difficulty finding spaces, especially during peak times, requiring them to use off-site street parking or public car parks which can be a considerable walk away. Access to rooms often involves navigating steep, narrow, and sometimes dark outdoor staircases, which can be challenging for guests with mobility issues, the elderly, or those carrying heavy luggage. Some reviews also mention a lack of adequate handrails on these stairs.
Staff & Service
The self-check-in process is consistently lauded as slick, easy, and efficient, with clear instructions and access codes provided via text or email, allowing for a seamless arrival and departure without direct staff contact. While the check-in is largely automated, guests who interact with staff, particularly the bar staff, often describe them as friendly, helpful, attentive, and responsive to queries or issues. Some guests, however, have reported instances of less helpful or "disconnected" service. The housekeeping service receives high praise, with rooms being cleaned daily and fresh towels provided, contributing significantly to guest comfort. A popular and appreciated gesture is the provision of free drink vouchers for the on-site bar, adding value to the stay.
Additional Information
Many guests highlight the excellent value for money offered, considering the quality of the rooms and convenient location. Some guests recommend booking directly for potential discounts and additional perks like free drinks. It's important to note that rooms are often located in a separate building adjacent to the main pub, which can influence noise levels depending on the room's position. Guests are advised that management contact is primarily for emergencies, aligning with the self-service model. This approach provides a high degree of independence, though guests should be prepared for minimal direct interaction with hotel personnel outside of the bar area.
