Positive Reviews

Quiet village location with good transport links

Travellers welcomed this property's quiet location in the Essex hamlet of Battlesbridge as it put them a short drive from Basildon, Chelmsford and Wickford. Visitors enjoyed browsing the extensive antiques centre next door. Diners liked the way they could walk to pleasant village gastro-pubs or discover a wider choice of restaurants a short drive away. Drivers found it handy being just off the A 130 and near more key roads like the A12, M11 and M25 for uncomplicated access to London, regional attractions, sports venues, beaches and airports. Non-motorists liked the proximity of Battlesbridge and Wickford train stations for services to London Liverpool Street.

Praise for tasty breakfasts

Guests often praised the cooked-to-order full English breakfast served in a comfortable dining room, saying it provided a delicious and filling start the day.

Appealing rooms and pleasant gardens

The reportedly cosy, comfortable and clean rooms with en suite bathroom facilities attracted positive opinions from many reviewers. There was also praise for the inviting gardens, which hosted an outdoor cafe service in the warmer months.

Negative Reviews

Claims certain rooms had shortcomings

Several visitors claimed they struggled to adjust the room temperature to their liking in certain rooms. Others said some of the rooms were fairly small, especially when at full occupancy. There were also claims that there was tired-looking decor in several rooms.

No 24-hour reception

The lack of a 24-hour reception bothered several reviewers and latecomers sometimes disliked having to summon the proprietors, who lived close by, on their mobile phones to gain access.

Minor cleanliness grumbles

There was occasional criticism from some quarters over cleanliness standards. Rubbish leftover from previous guests and inadequately cleaned bed linens were among the issues encountered by some critical reviewers.
