About Gainsboro

The Gainsboro is a delightful award winning B&B with lovely garden out front. It is situated within waking distance of Torquay Station, which has direct services to London and the South East.

All of the five rooms have their own private bathrooms with showers, and feature flat screen TV’s, hospitality trays and toiletries. Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the building.

Guests are free to use the lounge and garden, and the owners are always happy to share their knowledge of the surrounding area. There is also parking available.

The Gainsboro is well known for its breakfasts. They are served in the Victorian dining room, and feature full English, and also vegetarian, options. Torquay is known for its great cafes and restaurants, and there are many good dining options nearby.

The beach is just a five minute walk away from the B&B, while the evocative moors are 12 miles drive to the north.

Positive Reviews

Unquestionably excellent breakfast

Again and again guests rave about the breakfast. It must be something to do with the Devon countryside, but guests say that the breakfasts are exceptionally tasty, and seem to be made from top class ingredients only. Also mentioned is that guests with special needs, like vegetarians, are thoughtfully catered to.

Absolutely fabulous hosts

Guests can't speak more highly of the hosts, Sue and Stuart. They are described as extending the warmest welcome, helped down by tea and cakes. They are also described as offering the best local information on sights around Torquay.

Convenient location close to the station

The Torquay station is within walking distance, and there is plenty to do nearby, so some felt that they could have a great holiday even if they just turned up at the station with their bags.

Negative Reviews

Breakfast hours between 8:30 and 9:00

About the only negative item of any substance was that the breakfast hours are quite restrictive, between 8:30 and 9:00. While this is very chummy, as the whole house usually gets to have breakfast at the same time, one or two guests did feel the hours were a little too restrictive.

Some of the décor perhaps dated

Again, a very, very rare complaint, but for some the decor might be a little old fashioned. It is a Victorian B&B, so invariable the atmosphere will reflect this a little. The B&B is not suitable for guests looking for slick and ultra-modern design.

One room perhaps a tad dark

A guest did mention that one of the rooms was a bit dark, perhaps darker than the others. Light lovers are advised to speak to the owners so as not to be allocated this room. Vampires on the other hand can naturally make a point to request it.
