About Sojourn Beds

Sojourn Beds provides private rooms and dormitory accommodation for budget-conscious travellers. The hostel is located in the heart of this old, colonial town, and is housed in a circa 1930's shophouse.

The rooms and four-bed dormitories at Sojourn Beds are either air conditioned, or they include an electric fan. A desk, chair, mirror and reading light are also among the typical inclusions. Shared bathroom facilities are standard.

There are two lounges and a garden terrace. Luggage storage is offered and maps, travel brochures, and cycle hire are also available.

Breakfast is complimentary and served in the cafe. Tea and coffee are available at all times. Cheap dining is enjoyed from the many day and night food courts, while nearby restaurants include N & N which is approximately 50 metres from this hostel.

Modelled on London’s Kensington Gardens, it's approximately two kilometres to Lake Gardens. Favoured excursions include the Heritage Trail, and colonial remnants are less than three kilometres away at Maxwell Hill.

Positive Reviews

Perfect hosts

The delightful and extremely helpful hosts make this a favourite hostel for world-travelling guests. The hosts always have time to stop, chat and assist. They are, in the eyes of guests, simply perfect.

Extremely clean and comfortable

The place itself is very highly rated by guests. Even those staying in dormitories say that everything is clean and modern, and the pods are really quite spacious. The hostel, generally, is immaculate. Guests say that the expected creaking of floorboards and old beds is not apparent here. Everywhere has obviously been upgraded with great care and thoughtful planning. In short, guests love this hostel.

Taiping is a topping place to visit

Guests recommend Taiping as being a good stopping-off point in order to draw breath before travelling on to Penang. The hostel is, they feel, well placed and is less than a couple of kilometres from the central bus stop. The modern-looking railway station is a similar distance from the hostel. Taiping’s food stalls are recommended as being the economical way to eat, sometimes to excess. Joining in the morning exercises at Lake Gardens helps to keep that weight down.

Negative Reviews

There is no everlasting peace here.

Taiping translates to everlasting peace in Hokkien. However, this element is absent for guests trying to sleep in rooms which are next to the very busy and noisy street. The Dragon room draws particularly adverse comments from guests and is, they say, excessively noisy.
