About The Black Boy

The Black Boy is a 16th-century inn that occupies a prime location in the centre of picturesque market town Sudbury. The railway station, with services to London, and the bus station are both just a few minutes’ walk.

Single, double, twin and family rooms are available. All feature en-suite facilities, a flat screen television and a welcome tray. Some rooms offer views over Market Square to the front of the inn.

Guests can enjoy a pleasant drink in the courtyard seating area and those with a car can use the free on-site car park.

The Black Boy’s beamed-restaurant is the place to enjoy a tasty cooked breakfast, a lunchtime snack and an evening Chef’s Special made from seasonal ingredients.

Just along the road, Gainsborough’s House is a fascinating museum that documents the life of the world-renowned, Sudbury-born artist. A seven-minute walk, The Quay community theatre hosts plays and musical performances.

Positive Reviews

Great location in Sudbury

If you are looking for accommodation in the centre of Sudbury, you won't find anywhere else as convenient as The Black Boy. It is located in Market Square in the heart of Sudbury where numerous high street shops can be found. Also, the town's train and bus stations and attractions such as Gainsborough's House and The Quay theatre are within easy walking distance.

Good accommodation

Guests mention that the standard of accommodation here is good. The double rooms in particular are described as spacious and guests like historic features such as high ceilings, attractive windows and traditional fireplaces. They also like the views of Market Square. However, some rooms are smaller than others, so bear this in mind when booking and if in doubt go for a double or family room.

Staff very friendly

The Black Boy is a family-run business and guests report that they found the owners and members of staff friendly and very willing to help whenever possible.

Negative Reviews

Noisy outside

Some guests were disturbed by noise coming from Market Square. Early morning deliveries to nearby shops and the market, which is held every Thursday and Sunday, are the main sources of noise.

Parking can be tricky

The Black Boy's on-site car park offers parking spaces for those with a car. However, some guests found it a little difficult to find and questioned whether it would be sufficiently big enough to cope with busy periods.

Beds not to everyone's liking

A few guests found the beds a little uncomfortable, describing the mattresses as lumpy and thin.
