About Great Northern Hotel Sure Hotel Collection by Best Western

This evocative Victorian hotel is located in the heart of Peterborough, just opposite the city's mainline train station. Time-honoured interiors, parquet-floored corridors and hearty servings of classic British fayre ensure the recently renovated Great Northern retains plenty of old-fashioned charm.

All of the hotel's traditional yet individually styled guest rooms feature elegant en-suite facilities. Flat-screen TVs and hospitality trays are standard features; some rooms have safes and trouser presses.

The Great Northern operates a 24-hour reception desk and provides complementary Wi-Fi access throughout the building. Free parking is available.

Traditional British staples like full English breakfasts, fish and chips, sticky toffee pudding and afternoon tea are served in the refined surroundings of the Circa 1852 Restaurant & Coffee Shop. A wide assortment of hot beverages, soft drinks, fine wines, draught beers and real ales are also available.

Peterborough's magnificent cathedral and bustling city centre are within five-minutes' walk.

Positive Reviews

Surroundings are very evocative.

It has to be said that the hotel really has been very sympathetically renovated. Indeed, the classical décor, dark woods and period features all help to make you feel like you've been transported back to the glory days of Britain's locomotive past.

Location couldn't be better.

The city centre - and that glorious cathedral - are only a brief walk away while the train station (itself recently renovated) is literally just across the road. Despite this though you can hardly hear the trains coming and going at all when you're in the

Food is excellent.

If you're a fan of delectable, old-fashioned British cuisine then you're in for a real treat here. Perfectly cooked and beautifully presented, the offerings proffered in the Circa 1852 Restaurant & Coffee Shop are worth a visit alone. Top Tip: try the sti

Negative Reviews

Hotel feels a bit stuffy at times.

This has nothing to do with the traditional Victorian surroundings but is instead a reflection on the lack of effective air-conditioning. Stay here during a hot spell and you'll soon find it hard to maintain any kind of stiff upper lip.

No lift up to the first floor.

It's a Victorian building so you'll have to be prepared to tackle the stairs whenever you want to venture out of your room. Fine if you're fit and healthy but a chore if you're anything but...

Weekend functions can be noisy.

The hotel is a popular wedding reception venue so it is common to hear party music emanating from the function rooms until around 23.00 on Saturday evenings. Be sure to bring some ear plugs if you're an early-to-bed type.
