Positive Reviews

Fabulous central location

Guests overwhelmingly liked the location of this hotel, which faced Parliament House on the fringes of Melbourne's central business district. It was reportedly easy to access public transport links nearby. Collins Street commercial quarter and the dining hotspot of Bourke Street were just a short walk away.

Positive about service and food

Plenty of visitors found the customer service was friendly and courteous. For most staff it seemed nothing was too much trouble. Many reviewers liked the way the service evoked a bygone era with old-fashioned details like smartly-dressed doormen. Diners were largely upbeat about the restaurant with particular praise for the a la carte breakfast and afternoon high tea with pastries, scones and dainty sandwiches.

Interesting building has old world charm

This hotel's illustrious past as an icon of Victorian Australia was a source of interest for many guests who felt it retained much of its old world charm and character to this day.

Negative Reviews

Grand hotel would benefit from update

Critics thought the hotel would benefit from an update in certain areas. Some public areas looked in need of a revamp, according to a few reviewers. Others said their rooms contained dated or tired-looking furnishings including worn upholstery. Several visitors disliked the bathrooms, claiming they were outdated and featured showers with erratic water pressure and temperature. However, a significant phased refurbishment was scheduled to end in 2018.

Light sleepers bothered by noise

Light sleepers staying in parts of the hotel which contained floorboards sometimes reported being able to hear guests pacing about in the rooms above.

Doubts over value for money

With claims of some rooms being too small and minor cleanliness issues, critics often questioned whether their stay represented good value for money compared to other upscale hotels they had experienced.
