About Varley House

Located close to the centre of Ilfracombe, Varley House lies within easy reach of both the harbour and the main town. Friendly service and sweeping views are hallmarks of this large, traditional B&B.

Guest rooms are tastefully decorated and come complete with large private bathrooms, flat-screen TVs and tea/coffee making facilities. Some rooms have blackout curtains and boast large windows proffering views of the sea or nearby hills.

Residents can relax with a borrowed book, play a board game or watch TV in the spacious guest lounge. Complementary Wi-Fi is available throughout the building and parking is provided free of charge.

Freshly cooked breakfasts prepared with locally sourced ingredients are served each morning, along with buffet and vegetarian options. A modest drinks selection is made available in the small bar and lounge.

Hillsborough Nature Reserve is directly opposite Varley House; Damien Hirst's famed 'Verity' statue is a 15-minute walk away.

Positive Reviews

Plenty of parking

Unlike a lot of seaside B&Bs, Varley House offers far more in the way of parking than the typical 'handful spaces out front' approach Thus, you can rest assured that, regardless of how big your vehicle is or what time you arrive, you won't have a problem parking here.

Harbour views are quite lovely

Some of the guest bedrooms afford outstanding views of Ilfracombe's pleasant little harbour If you bring some binoculars and manage to get your angles right, you may even see Damien Hirst's 'Verity' without having to leave the comfort of your room.

Hosts are very welcoming

It may be a traditional looking B&B but the welcome proffered here is anything but formal or austere Friendly and accommodating to a fault, the hosts of Varley House fill this big old house with a genuine warmth that makes the place as a whole feel supremely welcoming.

Negative Reviews

Wireless Internet could be better

The Wi-Fi signal is fine and dandy in the downstairs areas However, this reliability seems to dissipate the further upstairs you go If you want a steady signal in one of the top rooms then you'll have to hope the digi-gods smile on you.

Walking to and from the hotel can be challenging

The hotel is set upon a hill so venturing out on foot requires a fair bit of 'up and downing' even when you're just nipping into town or strolling down to the harbour Certainly something for those with mobility issues or parents with little ones in tow to think about.

But that's about it

Put the temperamental Wi-Fi and steep local topography to one side and you'll see there isn't really much else about Varley House to take issue with.
