About Glencoe Cabins and Caravans

Specifically set up by outdoor enthusiasts, Glencoe Independent Hostel offers travellers comfortable budget accommodation in a gorgeous setting at the foot of Glencoe.

Most of the accommodation consists of hostel-style bunk beds in a communal bunkhouse, but there are also a few luxury caravans. The caravans have little kitchenettes, their own bathrooms, and are surprisingly roomy. The bunkhouse has communal bathrooms and kitchen.

There is plenty of parking on-site, and also free Wi-Fi. The staff are keen on the outdoors, and will be happy to recommend hiking routes to guests.

Those not self catering should ask staff about dining option in nearby Glencoe village.

The focus at Glencoe Cabins and Caravans is definitely on the outdoors. Glencoe Mountain ski lift area is about 11.5 miles away, while hikers will find numerous peaks to tackle starting right from the hostel.

Positive Reviews

Terrific views from the site

Guests were clearly in the area to appreciate the natural beauty and perhaps do a bit of hiking. They were very happy to be right in the thick of things, with gorgeous views, possibly of peaks they were going to climb, in all directions.

Great communal kitchen

Several guests were quite impressed with the communal kitchen, saying that it had everything they needed to cook up a storm, and that it was even kept reasonably clean considering it was a communal kitchen used by many people.

Great base camp for climbs

Many guests were in the area for the climbing, and considered the hostel to be a great place from which to start their ascents of the surrounding peaks. Also mentioned was the relative proximity to the chairlift at Glencoe Mountain.

Negative Reviews

Remote if you do not have a car

While this is of course fairly normal in the highlands, some did mention that guests would be relatively isolated without a car. The village of Glencoe is some distance away.

Oddly placed communal bathrooms

Several guests staying in the main part of the hostel accommodation speak of an odd location for the bathrooms, both the ladies and gents. The ladies speak about having to walk through the dining room from the rooms to the bathroom, a bit awkward perhaps in the morning when still in pyjamas and others are having their breakfast. The gents also speak about having to dash through the cold to get to their bathroom.

Issues with mould and rising damp

Though not brought up often, this was perhaps the most serious complaint. Some guests mentioned that they saw or smelled mould in the rooms they were sleeping, which they found a little disconcerting.
