Positive Reviews

We'll Be Back!

Many guests were repeat visitors who said they wouldn't consider staying anywhere else. Some of those staying for the first time said they were already planning their next visit. Most would definitely recommend Blackwater to hill walkers, hikers and bikers, in fact to anyone visiting the Scottish highlands.

Fantastic Accommodations & Great Value

Blackwater received rave reviews with some guests saying it was more like a hotel than a hostel. The accommodations were described as clean and comfortable and most thought they received excellent value for their money. Guests also noted the clean and modern en-suite bathrooms, large, well equipped community kitchens and the equipment drying room, invaluable after a day in the highland's wet and misty weather. Free on-site parking was also a plus.

Cheers For Calum

Calum, the hostel's genial owner and general manager, drew praise from numerous guests who mentioned him by name and described him as a genuinely nice guy who couldn't do enough for his guests. Some guests said it was Calum who made the experience unforgettable.

Negative Reviews

Hang It Up

There were very few serious complaints about Blackwater Hostel, but a few guests would have appreciated more coat hooks inside the lodge.

Wi-Fi Woes

Intermittent and slow Wi-Fi was a problem for some guests.

Beds Uncomfortable For Some

While most people were satisfied with the sleeping accommodations, some found the mattresses hard and uncomfortable and would have preferred bed springs to wooden slats, others didn't like the plastic mattress covers.
