About The City Gate

The City Gate is a traditional pub and coaching inn located in the heart of Exeter, at the former gate of an ancient Roman wall.

Rooms are warmly furnished with wood accents and large windows for lots of light. Each one is provided with tea/coffee facilities, a desk, armchairs and free Wi-Fi.

There are two meeting/function rooms which can accommodate up to one hundred people. The City Gate also has a beer garden and conservatory from where patrons can enjoy food and drinks from the pub.

The City Gate pub is part of Young’s Brewery and serves up real ales as well as traditional British cuisine made with local ingredients.

The Exeter Central and Exeter St. David’s train stations are both nearby, as is Exeter Cathedral and the high street.

Positive Reviews

Children under three stay free

Kids under the age of three stay free of charge in a room with a paying adult, as well as use of a free cot Extra beds can be added to rooms for older children or adults, but this comes at a daily surcharge.

Excellent authentic pub experience

The City Gate was originally just a pub and is well-known by locals and visitors alike for having a great selection of beers as well as wines The atmosphere is a friendly, unpretentious one as well and seating arrangements are flexible, either inside, out in the garden, or on the sofas in the conservatory.

Good location to see historic Exeter

Exeter is a city full of fascinating old sites such as the cathedral and lively quayside There is also some good high street and vintage shopping as well as several other places to dine well All this is at your doorstep from The City Gate.

Negative Reviews

Music from the pub can be loud

The City Gate is, after all adjacent to a real pub and may get noisy in the evenings, particularly on weekends or if a function is being hosted by the hotel/pub To avoid disturbances, request a room further away from the pub side of the hotel.

Ensuite bathrooms need some attention

Some bathroom fittings have shown signs of needing repair or replacement e g loose shower heads, etc.

No lift to higher rooms

The hotel rooms go up three storeys, however there is no lift for guests on these floors to use This is not dire but may be something of note for the infirm, elderly, families with young children, etc You may do better requesting a room on the ground floor.
