The Angel of the North (Gateshead, United Kingdom)

This iconic modern sculpture standing atop an outcrop between two arterial highways outside Gateshead has come to symbolise the north east of England. It is claimed to be seen by 150,000 visitors every year. Designed by sculptor Antony Gormley it was made of weathered steel and fabricated in nearby Hartlepool. The angel is 65 feet (20 metres) high, has a wingspan of 175 feet (54 metres)and weighs 200 tonnes.
