The initial construction of the Speicherstadt commenced in 1883 to create storage for duty-free shipping goods. These depots, which face the water and back onto the street, have been converted to form a 630 000 square meter area which houses a number of museums and exhibitions. It is the largest singular depot complex globally and was declared a national monument in 1991.
