Reculver Towers and Roman Fort (Herne Bay, United Kingdom)

The Reculver Towers and Roman Fort are situated in the hamlet of Reculver, 3 miles to the east of Herne Bay. The structures belong to different historical periods, separated by ten centuries. The Fort was a strategic Roman stronghold at the north end of the Wantsum Channel where it met the Thames Estuary. The Channel separated the land to the east from the mainland. This area is still known as the Isle of Thanet although it is now attached to the mainland and the Wantsum Channel is just a stream. Only parts of the south and east walls of the Fort remain, but documentary evidence suggests a substantial stronghold of about 500 men. The first church appeared on the site in the 7th century and the towers were added in the 12th century. The encroaching sea meant the village was abandoned at the end of the 18th century and the church demolished, but the towers were retained as a navigational aid to shipping. They are still a prominent feature on the coastline today. The site is managed by English Heritage. It is open and freely accessible but there is no access to the interior of the Towers or the Fort. There are no visitor information facilities, but there is a car park and toilets.
