The Highland Games in Pitlochry have been competed since 1852, making them among the oldest modern celebrations of the games in Scotland. The Pitlochry games are held annually in early September. The competition is held at the Recreation Ground, along the River Tummel and south of the town. Highlights include the British tug-o-war, hammer throw and caber toss, putting the stone, a variety of track and field events, cycling, piping competitions, massed bands, and Highland dance. A street parade of pipe bands is part of the pagentry. Admission is charged, and a parking fee applies. Vendors offer a variety of foods and Highland crafts near the parade field.
