Pass of Killiecrankie (Killiecrankie, United Kingdom)

The Pass of Killiecrankie is a mountain pass on the River Garry in Perthshire between Ben Vrackie and Tenandry Hill. It’s a major pass on the way to the Highlands, an area known for the landscape and a site of the historical battle during the first Jacobite uprising. It was a major Jacobite victory, achieved on 27 July 1689, but it had little impact on the fate of the uprising and it is considered that the loss of life and the fatal wounding of the Jacobite general, John Graham of Claverhouse (aka Bonnie Dundee) probably contributed to the eventual failure. Now it’s chiefly remembered for the Soldier’s Leap: a redcoat soldier running away from the Jacobites pursuing him jumped over the river Garry, across an 18 feet chasm. The Pass is owned by National Trust for Scotland who run a visitors’ centre there April-October. There is a car park (costing 2 GBP per visit) as well as toilets, café and displays.
