Magdalen College (Oxford, United Kingdom)

Magdalen College is situated on High Street, Oxford, and has riverside grounds. It is part of the University of Oxford and was founded in 1458 by William Waynflete. The college is open to visitors from 1pm to dusk most of the year, and from noon to dusk from 24th June to 30th September. Groups must book in advance. Some areas of the college are private. The Old Kitchen serves lunch, snacks and afternoon tea. Among Magdalen College’s alumni are 9 Nobel Prize Winners, including Professor Seamus Heaney. Other many other famous alumni are Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Oscar Wilde, C.S. Lewis, Ian Hislop and John Betjeman. Magdelen College is famous for its choir, and several CDs are available for purchase. Around 15 services are held in the chapel each week during Full Term, and the general public may attend any of these. The choir sings at the 6pm service every day except Monday, and at the 11am service on Sundays. The college has conference facilities for up to 160 people. There are seminar rooms as well as an auditorium and a medieval dining hall. Accommodation and catering services are available on site.
