La Tour Constance et les Remparts (Aigues-Mortes, France)

Aigues-Mortes was founded in the 12th century as a port for Louis IX to embark on the seventh crusade.Built from scratch, it was laid out on a rectilinear plan which is still preserved today.To encourage people to settle in this inhospitable spot privileges such as tax exemptions were offered. The town prospered until the mid 14th century when the sea level dropped and the channel silted up.The Tour Constance was the first structure, built as a defensive tower, and it stands a little apart from the walls.The ramparts were added later and are a typical example of 13th century defensive building.They completely surround the town, with gateways of various sizes for access.It is possible to walk round the ramparts and into the Tour Constance, which has a tiny chapel used by Louis IX and graffiti from prisoners of later centuries.There is a fine view across the surrounding salt marshes from the top. Opening hours are 10am to 5.30pm April to Spetember, 10am to 7pm May to August. Closed 1 January, 1 May, 1 and 11 November, 25 December. Allow 1½ hours. Multi-lingual leaflets are available for self-guide, or guided tours are available, allow one week’s notice. New for 2007 is an audio-guide and a children’s tour. Toilets and a shop are on site.
