In the 17th century Briana§on was at the frontier with Savoy, and following the destruction of the town by the Dule of Savoy in 1692, Vauban was sent to fortify it. He surrounded it with walls, ditches and bastions: over 100 years later, in 1815, it was still able to resist attack. The fort is still in use, as a base for the French army’s mountain warfare section. Today the ““Gargoyle””, as the fort is called, offers guided tours on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2.30pm (winter) and 3pm (spring and autumn). In the summer season tours are also available at 10am.. It is one of the Vauban fortifications on the UNESCO World Heritage site list.
