Hythe Quay has served Maldon as port since well over 1000 years and is today home to the largest collection of fully rigged sailing barges. “Hythe”, which is Saxon and means as much as “landing place”, was a separate village which served as port of the town and was the port of call especially for East Coast barges transporting hay into London to feed the large amount of horses in the capital city. With the demand of hay dwindling and faster transport methods for other cargo being developed, these barges ceased to exist and only a few, beautifully restored, examples still exist today. Many of these have now found a permanent home at Hythe Quay and can be rented for pleasure cruises on the river Blackwater, most also offer daily cruises for individuals. Along the quay are several pubs, all located in historical buildings, which offer guests the chance to sit down and relax with a drink or food while watching the boats sail by. Private mooring is also available and can be arranged over the website.
