Exmoor National Park (Dulverton, United Kingdom)

Exmoor National Park was created in 1954 and extends over 267 square miles in Somerset and Devon. It is characterised by moorland, grazed by the famous Exmoor ponies, thickly wooded valleys, ancient farms and a rugged coastline. The coastline is perhaps the most surprising feature as it has the highest sea cliffs in the UK, and the most inaccessible coastline in England. There are spectacular waterfalls tumbling down to the Bristol Channel, which has the highest tidal range in Europe. There are rights of way all over Exmoor, which provide opportunities for walking, biking and riding in comparative solitude. England’s longest National Trail, the South West Coast Path, starts on Exmoor’s coastline. Wildlife abounds, including rare varieties of whitebeam, lichen and butterflies. Not all the Park is wild and solitary. The Valley of the Rocks, Watersmeet, Cleeve Abbey and Tarr Steps have been popular attractions for many years. The Park Authority Headquarters is in Dulverton where there is also a visitor centre. Other visitor centres are at Combe Martin, Dunster and Lynmouth.
