Colchester Castle, the largest keep ever built by the Normans, is situated on top of the ruined base of the great Temple of Claudius, which had been built by the Romans in Camulodunum - as the city was known since 25 BC. The exhibtion inside the castle takes the visitor through a walk in time. Starting from the earliest findings in the area, dating back over 500.000 years ago, over the Roman occupation, Queen Boudica’s revolt, the Saxon and Norman reign, to medieval times and the Tudor era and, finally, the Great Siege of Colchester in 1648 during the English civil War. Audio visual features, as well as touch & feel objects and colouring-in sheets are provided to keep the younger visitors interested. For refreshments there is a snack bar and souvenirs and guide books can be bought from the gift shop. Colchester Castle is fully wheelchair accessible. Open all year round, Mo-Sa 10am - 5pm, Sun 11am-5pm.
