Chester city walls (Chester, United Kingdom)

Chester City Walls were originally built by the Romans as a defensive structure to defend the town of Chester. The first walls were constructed in 79AD and the earliest surviving sections date back to 120AD although most of what we see today is medieval or Victorian. The walls have a Grade 1 listed status and are the most intact City Walls found anywhere in the UK. They are also a designated Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM). Several parts of the wall were damaged during the English Civil War and during this time many of its towers and gatehouses were destroyed. Other towers were later removed as the walls became a popular promenade to allow complete access along the walls and today King Charles Tower is the only remaining structure on the wall. The walls form an almost complete circle around the city centre and cover an area of 2 miles (3 kilometres). A footpath runs along the whole length of the wall which can be accessed by various different points along its length. Join photographer, author, historian and guide Steve Howe to wander Chester’s world famous City Walls- the most complete in Britain- and discover the delights of the city they have guarded for 2000 years; see sights and hear stories you’ll never find in any guidebook! His walks take place all year round, are easily arranged, friendly, informal and very informative. For more information visit the homepage.
