Bay of Somme (Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, France)

The Bay of Somme, where the River Somme ends in the English channel, is up to 72 km wide. The estuary expands from the Pointe du Hourdel on its southern tip to the Pointe de Saint-Quentin on its northern tip. Due to the tides there is a large change in the sea level and the sea can go out as far as 14 km from Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, so caution is necessary for all those who wish to cross the estuary by walk. The Bay of Somme is a member of the “Club of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World” and internationally renowned for its ecological wealth, the northern section of the bay is listed as a nature reserve. It is home to a diversity of flora and fauna and a popular spot for birdwatching. Nature walks, guided and self-guided, and cycle routes are available all along the bay.A boat trip can be taken from Saint-Valery-sur-Somme where also a ride in a steam train can be enjoyed during the summer months, while on the other side of the bay, in Le Crotoy, a small yacht harbour and a beach can be found.
