Battersea Park is a public park in London situated on the south bank of the River Thames. It covers an area of 83 hectares (200 acres) and first opened to the public in 1858. The park includes a small children’s zoo, a boating lake and a bandstand. It also features a Buddhist Peace Pagoda erected in 1985. The Battersea Evolution (formerly known as the Battersea Park Events Arena) is used for temporary exhibitions and travelling fairs. The park also features several football pitches, tennis courts and a running track. In 2004 Battersea Park underwent an £11 million refurbishment and was officially reopened by Prince Philip on 4th June 2004. Entry into the park is free of charge and it is open from 8am until dusk. The nearest Underground stations is Sloane Square with connections to the District and Circle Lines.
