About Y Pengwern

The Pengwern Arms is a community owned pub, restaurant and hotel. It is run by the community and for the community on a not-for-profit basis. It relies heavily on a volunteer workforce plus a few key paid staff. This listed building and associated business was rescued by local people in 2011, following a two year closure. It has provided hospitality for residents and visitors in Llan Ffestiniog since the 17th Century. We strive to provide a homely but professional welcome and service for our guests. The Pengwern is in a quiet village in the heart of Snowdonia, within easy reach of all the amenities and attractions this spectacular area has to offer, we are approximately half way between the summits of yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and Cadair Idris, but still only 30 minutes from the spectacular beaches at Harlech, Black Rock sands (Porthmadog) and Criccieth. We are only minutes away from the thrills available at Blaenau Ffestiniog, 'Zip World', 'Bounce Below', 'Caverns' underground adventure and the world famous Antur Stiniog downhill mountain biking tracks. Slightly further afield are Surf Snowdonia, Forest Coaster, Treetop nets, etc.

Review summary

This AI-generated summary was based on reviews from multiple
sites

This hotel stands out as a community-run establishment, offering a unique and authentic local experience that many guests find highly appealing. Its signature feature is the vibrant community pub at its heart, fostering a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Guests consistently highlight the friendly and attentive staff, delicious and plentiful food, and its excellent location as a perfect base for exploring the stunning Snowdonia region. It is particularly well-suited for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts due to its direct access to trails and proximity to attractions like Zip World. Families and couples seeking a genuine local immersion, as well as dog owners, will find it highly accommodating. To enhance your stay, it is advisable to confirm the specific breakfast offerings upon booking, as these can vary, and if sensitive to noise, consider requesting a room located away from the lively bar area, especially on evenings with live music.

Facilities & Amenities
The hotel offers a range of facilities designed to enhance a guest's stay. Its most prominent feature is the lively community pub downstairs, which is consistently praised for its warm atmosphere, good beer selection, and the presence of a cozy log fire. Many guests enjoy the live music and games room with a pool table, making it a popular spot for both locals and visitors. The hotel provides free Wi-Fi throughout, ensuring guests can stay connected. Ample parking is available, often located conveniently at the rear of the property. Additionally, a communal kitchen/breakfast area is accessible, equipped with a microwave and extra supplies of tea, coffee, milk, and bottled water, offering added convenience for guests. While the building has a rustic charm, some areas are noted as being a bit tired.

Cleanliness & Room Comfort
Most guests find the rooms to be clean and tidy, with many describing them as cozy and comfortable. The beds are frequently praised for their comfort, ensuring a restful night's sleep. Guests appreciate the provision of ample tea, coffee, and milk supplies in the rooms, along with complimentary toiletries and bottled water. Some rooms are equipped with extra heaters, which are welcomed, especially on colder nights. However, feedback on room condition is mixed; while many find them charming, some guests note that the decor can appear tired or dated, and a few mention peculiar odors or signs of mold in certain areas. Noise levels also receive varied comments; some rooms are described as quiet, while others experience noise from the bar below or thin walls. The bathrooms are generally clean, with some guests praising the hot water and good shower pressure, though a few find the showers to be small or have drainage issues.

Dining & Food Quality
Feedback on dining is notably mixed, particularly regarding breakfast. Most guests appreciate the convenience and value of the continental breakfast provided, often served as a grab-and-go bag with items like fruit, yogurt, cereal, and toast, which is ideal for early departures or hikers. However, a significant number of guests express disappointment, feeling that the hotel's advertising as "Bed and Breakfast" is misleading as no cooked breakfast option is typically available, and some find the continental selection too basic. In stark contrast, the evening meals receive overwhelmingly positive reviews. Guests consistently praise the delicious, plentiful, and home-cooked food, highlighting the large portions and excellent value for money. Dishes like the roast dinner, burgers, and pies are frequently recommended, often featuring locally sourced ingredients. Some guests, however, have encountered issues with the kitchen hours, finding it unexpectedly closed on certain evenings.

Location & Accessibility
The hotel boasts a fantastic location, making it an ideal base for exploring the surrounding region. It is centrally situated within a quiet village, offering a peaceful retreat while still providing easy access to major attractions. Guests particularly appreciate its close proximity to Snowdonia National Park, with numerous hiking trails and waterfalls just a short walk or drive away. The popular Zip World adventure park is also conveniently located within a few minutes' drive. The hotel is well-connected, being near a train station and offering ample free parking on-site, often at the rear of the property. While the immediate village offers limited dining options beyond the hotel, requiring a short drive to find alternatives, the stunning mountain views and overall accessibility to the area's natural beauty are consistently highlighted as major advantages.

Staff & Service
The staff and service at the hotel consistently receive glowing reviews, standing out as a major highlight for many guests. The team is overwhelmingly described as friendly, welcoming, and exceptionally helpful, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Guests frequently commend their attentiveness and willingness to go above and beyond, whether it's providing local information and tips for exploring the area, assisting with unexpected issues like car breakdowns, or accommodating specific needs such as bringing breakfast to a separate area for dog owners. The check-in and check-out process is noted as being smooth and efficient. Many guests also appreciate that the hotel is community-run, feeling that this model contributes to the genuine hospitality and dedication to guest satisfaction. This commitment to excellent service ensures a pleasant and memorable stay for most visitors.

Additional Information
A significant and unique aspect of the hotel is its status as a community-run enterprise, with many guests appreciating the dedication and effort put in by local volunteers and staff to maintain its welcoming environment. The hotel is notably pet-friendly, allowing dogs in rooms, the bar, and the foyer, often without extra charges, and staff are accommodating to pet owners. Guests should be aware that the building is undergoing renovations, which means the exterior may appear tired or have scaffolding, though efforts are being made to improve the interior. While the hotel offers excellent value for money, some guests note that the TV signal in rooms can be unreliable, suggesting bringing personal streaming devices. It is also mentioned that the tap water in rooms is not for drinking, with bottled water provided. Guests are given a key for their room and the front door, allowing convenient late-night access.
