This establishment operates as a traditional pub with rooms, offering a unique and often lively atmosphere. It is consistently praised for its friendly staff and good value for money, making it a suitable choice for solo travelers seeking a convenient base or couples looking for a relaxed, authentic experience. Families might also find the spacious rooms appealing, though potential noise from the pub should be considered. Guests frequently highlight the quality of the pub's food, especially the Sunday carvery. To enhance your stay, be aware that live music or karaoke can be loud on weekends, and confirm breakfast details upon arrival as it's typically a continental, in-room offering.
Facilities & Amenities
Guests find the rooms generally well-equipped, often including a kettle with tea and coffee, and sometimes a coffee machine. Thoughtful additions like toiletries (such as cotton buds, shampoo, shaving gel, toothbrushes, and deodorants) are frequently appreciated. Free Wi-Fi is available, with the code often found on the room key. While most rooms have a TV, a few guests reported issues with reception or functionality. A communal fridge for milk is provided in the hallway, though its contents can be inconsistent, with some guests noting curdled or out-of-date milk. The hotel is an old building, which contributes to its character but also means some facilities, like showers, can be dated or have issues with water pressure or temperature.
Cleanliness & Room Comfort
Feedback on cleanliness and room comfort is mixed. Most guests find the beds comfortable and linens clean, with some praising the spacious rooms and the provision of an electric blanket for added warmth. However, a significant number of reviews mention issues such as thin mattresses, lumpy beds, or squeaky bed frames, impacting sleep quality. Noise from traffic outside or the pub downstairs is a common concern, especially for rooms directly above the bar, making it difficult to keep windows open. Bathrooms receive varied comments; some are clean and well-stocked, while others are described as dirty, having mould, a musty smell, or issues with damp and broken fixtures like shower heads or doors. Some rooms also report a persistent smoke smell or the presence of bugs.
Dining & Food Quality
The hotel's dining options, particularly the pub food, receive considerable attention. The Sunday carvery is a standout feature, frequently praised for its variety of meats (including fresh beef, turkey, and gammon), generous portions, and wide selection of vegetables, often described as hot and tender. Many guests highlight the excellent value and tasty food overall, with dishes like Pieminster pies, burgers, and steaks receiving positive mentions. The bar itself offers a good selection of drinks and a warm, cozy atmosphere, often enhanced by a log fire. However, breakfast is typically a continental, in-room offering, which some guests find limited, consisting of cereal and croissants, with occasional issues regarding milk freshness or availability. Some guests also note that the menu can be limited, and service for food can sometimes be slow.
Location & Accessibility
The hotel boasts a good location for accessing nearby areas like Bristol and Bath, and is within walking distance of Keynsham town centre and the local train station. It is also conveniently located near a bus stop, making public transport easily accessible. However, the hotel is situated on a busy main road, which contributes to noise levels, particularly for rooms facing the street. Parking is a frequently discussed topic; while some guests find roadside parking available and safe, many note that it is limited and can be tricky, especially during peak times. Some guests mention parking in a nearby football car park as an alternative, but the lack of a dedicated hotel car park is a common point of feedback.
Staff & Service
The staff consistently receive high praise for their friendliness, helpfulness, and welcoming attitude. Many guests highlight their accommodating nature, quick check-in process, and willingness to go above and beyond to ensure a pleasant stay. Specific mentions include staff being attentive, providing excellent service, and creating a great atmosphere in the pub. However, a minority of reviews describe staff as disorganised, slow, or even rude, particularly concerning issues with food orders or handling complaints. Despite these isolated negative experiences, the overwhelming sentiment is that the staff are a significant asset, contributing positively to the overall guest experience and making guests feel valued.
Additional Information
This establishment operates as an old building with a distinct pub atmosphere, which some guests describe as having a "hostel vibe" due to its budget nature. A key point for potential guests is the presence of live music or karaoke events in the bar, particularly on weekends, which can lead to significant noise levels in rooms directly above the pub, sometimes extending past midnight. This is often not clearly advertised beforehand, leading to unexpected disturbances for guests seeking a quiet night. Despite some rooms needing refurbishment and occasional issues with damp or broken sockets, many guests still consider it good value for money, especially given the in-room amenities provided.
