At the heart of the Gornergrat skiing/hiking district, the luxurious Riffelalp Resort 2222m lies 2,222 meters (7,290 ft.) above sea level. The first Grand Hotel was built between 1878–1884, but completely destroyed by fire in 1961. 1988–1998, the Berghotel Riffelalp opened again to visitors.
