The Dome of Sultaniyeh is said to be the highest brick dome in the world. It was built in the 14th Century as the mausoleum of Oljeitu who was a descendent of Genghis Khan. It took just 11 years to build (1306-1317) and is the only thing that remains of the town of Sultaniyeh. Oljeitu originally intended the building to be a suitable resting place for the remains of the 3rd Imam which he planned to bring here from Kerbela.
