[10.07.2007] Sugar Mill Ponds are located just outside the Village of Rawcliffe Bridge, about five miles to the West of Goole, in the East Riding of Yorkshire. This site covers an area of approximately twenty five acres and is one of the finest examples that I have seen of a former area of unsightly Industrial wasteland transformed into a tranquil, picturesque haven for Wildlife. This site is now a designated Local Nature [more]

[09.07.2007] The South Yorkshire Transport Museum can be found at Aldwarke, near Rotherham in South Yorkshire. Until recently this transport museum was located in the former Tinsley tram sheds between Sheffield and Rotherham. I visited here about 4 years ago and it was then called the Sheffield Bus Museum. Now it has relocated, it has been given a new name, the South Yorkshire Transport Museum. The former Sheffield Bus Museum [more]

[09.07.2007] Rotherhams largest Church is known as the Rotherham Minster and dominates the Centre of this South Yorkshire Town. Until recently this Church, which is as large as many Cathedrals, was known as All Saints Parish Church. This change in name was to reflect its importance as a Church in the region and also marked the culmination of a major restoration project. The Town of Rotherham grew up along the banks of where th [more]

The Riverside Court Hotel

Travel date: January 2007
[06.07.2007] The Riverside Court Hotel is situated just outside Sheffield City Centre within a few minutes walk of the main markets and one of the main Shopping areas of the City. It occupies a prominent position on the corner of Nursery Street, where it meets the Wicker. Historically the Wicker is an area of the City that was once a thriving part of Sheffield with lots of Shops and Businesses. Today it is rather run down, al [more]

[05.07.2007] The current Town Hall Building in the centre of Sheffield is one of only two Grade 1 listed Buildings in Sheffield. Built in 1890 this is the fourth Town Hall Building that the City has had. The first Town Hall Building was built in 1637. The second Town Hall Building was used between 1700 and 1808, whilst the third Building was used between 1808 and 1897. The current Town Hall Building is located on Pinstone S [more]

The Brecon Hotel in Rotherham

Travel date: December 2006
[04.07.2007] The Brecon Hotel in Rotherham was the choice of venue for a work's function. We had left it a little late to get in any of our preferred venues and found that the Brecon was just about the only place that could accommodate our part of around 40 people. This was my first visit to this Hotel, although since it is located on one of the main routes just outside of Rotherham it is a place that I have passed many times. [more]

[28.06.2007] The Shepherds Wheel is a 16th century Water Wheel that is located within a Workshop in the Porter Brook Valley, about 2 miles to the West of Sheffield City Centre. During the Industrial Revolution, Sheffield was the ideal location for Water powered Workshops and hundreds of different Water Wheels were constructed along its five Rivers. The earliest recorded records of Water being used to power Industrial Machinery [more]

[26.06.2007] The Old Queens Head Pub is the oldest surviving domestic building in the city of Sheffield and occupies a central location sandwiched between the modern Interchange bus terminal and the Ponds Forge Leisure Complex. The use of this building as a Pub only dates back to 1840 but the building itself was built in 1475. Since I used to live less than a five-minute walk from here it is a place that I used to drink in fai [more]

[24.06.2007] I thought that I knew about all of the Museums in my home City of Sheffield so I was recently surprised to hear about The Traditional Heritage Museum for the very first time. This Museum is located within a former Church building on Ecclesall Road, about half a mile outside the City Centre. It has often been referred to as "Sheffield's Secret Museum" and since I had never heard of it until a couple of weeks ago I [more]

[31.05.2007] Pontefract Castle lies high above the West Yorkshire Town of Pontefract. Today it is a popular tourist attraction in the area and it is a place that I recently visited with my Brother, who lives nearby. There is not a great deal that remains of this Castle above ground but what sets this place apart from many other similar places that I have visited are its underground tunnels and its incredibly well preserved cen [more]
