Whitby Abbey - Whitby, United Kingdom
Whitby Abbey (19.08.2007 11:14)
If you visit the small, picturesque seaside town of Whitby in North Yorkshire the one thing that you cannot fail to see are the eerie ruins of the Abbey, perched high on the hillside overlooking the town. If you decide to explore this little fishing town further you will find reference to Whitby's most famous hero, Captain Cook at every turn, but almost just as prominent, though less well known [more...] -
Magpie Cafe - Whitby, United Kingdom
The Magpie Cafe, Whitby (16.08.2007 18:06)
The Magpie Cafe in Whitby is one of the most famous restaurants in England, outside of London of course, where such things are two a penny. Unlike the majority of these other famous restaurants however the Magpie does noes deliver fancy haute cuisine, instead it is famous for its fish and chips. I am a regular visitor to Whitby, a small quaint little fishing town in the north east of England [more...] -
Number Five - Whitby, United Kingdom - July, 2007
Number Five Guest House (12.08.2007 10:10)
Whitby is a small fishing town in the north east of England that has plenty to offer the visitor. If you want to explore this place properly then the chances are you will need to stay overnight and Whitby has numerous different B&B's and Guest Houses to choose from. The Number Five is an example of one such Bed & Breakfast establishment and this is a place where I have stayed several times. It [more...] -
Clifton Park Museum - Rotherham, United Kingdom
The Clifton Park Museum (10.08.2007 17:43)
Clifton Park museum is located on the fringe of Rotherham town centre. The museum is housed in Clifton House, a Grade 11 listed building dating from 1793. This house was designed by John Carr, a prominent architect of that time and it was the family home of the Walker family. The original occupier was Joshua Walker and his wife. Joshua's father had made his fortune in the local steel industry. [more...] -
Elsecar Heritage Centre - Elsecar, United Kingdom
The Elsecar Heritage Centre (08.08.2007 09:16)
The Elsecar Heritage Centre is situated in the small, former mining village of Elsecar about 12 kilometres to the south of Barnsley in South Yorkshire. It is described as a Heritage and Craft Centre and since it opened it has won numerous awards. I often try and make a point of visiting such attractions as I find that it is an excellent way to learn about the local area and since entry into [more...] -
Jumbo Chinese Buffet - Sheffield, United Kingdom
The Jumbo Chinese Buffet (23.07.2007 18:20)
The last few years have seen a trend of "All you can eat" style buffet restaurants appearing in Sheffield where I live and to my knowledge there are now at least three Chinese and one Indian restaurant of this type within the city centre. The Jumbo is a large Chinese buffet restaurant and it was the also the first of the bunch to appear about five years ago. It is in direct competition with [more...] -
Graves Art Gallery - Sheffield, United Kingdom
The Graves Art Gallery (20.07.2007 21:51)
The Graves Art Gallery is one of several galleries in Sheffield that is owned by the City Council and because of this access is and always has been free. It is located right in the heart of Sheffield City Centre, above the City's library on the third floor, just around the corner from one of the City's other galleries, the Millennium Galleries. Together these two galleries now form a part of the [more...] -
Beauchief Abbey - Sheffield, United Kingdom
Beauchief Abbey (20.07.2007 20:20)
Beauchief Abbey lies 5 miles (8 kilometres) to the south of Sheffield City Centre, on a north-facing hillside. Mature woodland and two large golf courses surround it, and although only the remains of the Abbey exist today it is well worth a visit here just for the beauty and tranquillity of its setting. Robert FitzRanulf de Alfreton founded Beauchief (pronounced bee-chiff) Abbey in either 1176 [more...] -
Kelham Island Museum - Sheffield, United Kingdom
The Kelham Island Museum (20.07.2007 14:15)
The Kelham Island museum in Sheffield opened in 1982. I remember first visiting this place when I was at school when I guess I was about 12 or 13 years old, which would have made it around this date, although at the time I never realised that it was newly opened. The objective behind this museum was to provide a home and a permanent display for all of the articles, objects and pictures which [more...] -
City Hall - Sheffield, United Kingdom
The Sheffield City Hall (20.07.2007 13:41)
Sheffield has some amazing architecture and magnificent Victorian buildings and the City Hall which dominates the centre of the city is one of the grandest buildings of them all, yet surprisingly this building is not Victorian at all, but instead it is actually late Edwardian. The first stones, which came from the local Darley Dale quarry in Derbyshire, were not laid until the very end of the [more...]
