[reggieboy94, 03/02/2012] Clean spacious comfortable room....friendly knowledgeable pleasant staff...excellent Italian a stones throw away....
[serendipity, 08/09/2011] The hotel was decent enough for an overnight stay and because of its location made it easy to access York. I found it more relaxing than staying in the city and it was certainly pleasant sitting in the grounds on a summer evening.
As mentioned the rooms are basic but the communal areas of the hotel are well tended and the furnishings of much better quality and style. The service is good and the food tasty and well presented. We paid about £60 bed and breakfast so I can’t grumble. If you are looking for a decent hotel in pleasant surroundings and aren’t too bothered about a fancy bedroom the

[hannah_i, 12/07/2011] In comparison to its intimidating neighbour, the York Minster (yes, it is next door), St Michael le Belfry is a rather simple church, but it also has a great history and is most definitely worth the 1 minute journey from the Minster to visit. I would have thought it would be a catholic church, since Guy Fawkes is somewhat famous for being catholic, but he was actually baptised Anglican and the church is indeed Anglican.
[hannah_i, 12/07/2011] Although the Minster doesn't have the height of other comparable historical places of worship, it is absolutely breath taking in its size and intricate Gothic design. The Minster is beautiful inside and out, with the large stained glass windows throughout adding to its awe. The Great East Window, at over 23 metres tall, is the largest example of medieval stained glass in the world. I've visited a cathedral in just about every city I've been to, and York Minster is most definitely the most breath taking, followed closely by Cologne Cathedral. Definitely recommended for a couple of hours of amaz

[JoeFrench, 22/04/2011] My wife and I celebrated our anniversary in York and chose Abbeyfields based on a friend's recommendation. She was right! The location is perfect; quiet and yet so close to the city centre. Walking through Museum Gardens each day was a joy. The breakfast at Abbeyfields is the best we've ever experienced; and that includes a few 5 star hotels! If you plan to visit York, check out Abbeyfield's availability. You'll not be disappointed.
[TomBretts, 15/04/2011] Just loved this place. Clean, comfortable, relaxed and just 10 minutes walk through beautiful gardens into the centre of town. The breakfast has to be sampled to be believed. The best ingredients and perfectly prepared. It was our first visit to York. It won't be our last, and it will be Abbeyfields again.
[Lily007, 02/04/2011] The service is unacceptably poor.
Food otherwise is not bad.
They should perhaps concentrate on a smaller range of dishes but get each right, rather displaying a pretentious perplexing menu and an average quality.
Not going back.
[doyledoyle, 27/03/2011] We had a very warm and pleasant welcome on arrival and were given very useful
information on York and recommendations of places to eat.
We liked our 3rd floor contemporary bedroom (which had a 5ft continental style zip link bed) with the sloped roof it faced a relatively busy road but we were not bothered at all by any noise, we slept solid both nights. The breakfast was superb, cooked to order with an array of choice and waitress served (most places these days seem to be self service and dryed offerings).
We took the owners advice on Mumbai Lounge who do a fantastic Tandoori duck start

[featherstone111, 25/03/2011] Stayed 2 nights in one of their family 4 rooms it was large and easily accommoadted to the double and 2 single beds. We initially saw Carlton house on Booking.com website the booked direct saving £20 per night.
Our room was spotlessly clean decorated in a modern style ( yet in keeping with the period property) wall mounted flat screen tv, complimentary bottled water, magazines and quality toiletries in the bathroom. There was free wifi in the room and a free pc for guests in reception, you dont get this at your chain hotels (everything is chargeable).
Breakfast was a pleasure, with bags

[Herts33, 11/12/2010] This Georgian townhouse is very conveniently located 5 - 10 mins walk from the City walls, with private parking for guests. The staff are professional and very welcoming. Our room at the top and front of the house (third floor, so lots of stairs), under a coved ceiling, had good views across part of the city, and was very cosy, with flat screen tv and two comfortable chairs, a wide bed (continental style beds zipped together), modern furnishings and warm shower room ensuite, with fresh and plentiful towels each day. It was a bit of a squeeze to get access to the wardrobe because of the roof an

[koshkha, 09/10/2010] During our recent trip toYork we’d decided that we didn’t want to eat at our hotel. The menu looked like good value but just wasn’t at all exciting, so as we wandered around the old city centre I had half an eye on the lookout for potential dinner venues. We made the mistake of stopping off for a drink in a bar over-looking the river for a late afternoon pre-dinner drink. The mistake was not the location or the bar- it was the ‘two for one’ on cocktails. I’m a real lightweight with alcohol and after whiling away an hour and a half sipping two absurd concoctions of gin, elderflower and apple ju

[fizzytom, 20/06/2010] The brief: to find a reasonably priced (cheap) bed and breakfast close to the train station and within walking distance of the centre of York for one night only.
Not as easy as it sounds. York is a year round tourist destination and the cheapest rates often only apply if you are staying at least three nights. We were also looking at short notice and found that many of those that did not stipulate a three night stay were fully booked already. An internet trawl came up with the Holmlea as a possibility and a visit to their own website showed an even cheaper rate of £45 for a double room witho

[pamela333, 09/06/2010] We had such an enjoyable 3-day stay. Breakfast was delicious, the rooms really clean and we received such a warm welcome. Our twin bedded room was very spacious and nicely decorated. The sitting room was lovely with comfortable couches.
The staff were particulary friendly and helpful. They went out of their way in getting informatiion for us regarding a trip we wanted to make and it was always a delight to come down to breakfast in the mornings.
It was also very handy to nice restaurants, the railway station and particularly all that York has to offer.
We wouldn't hesitate to recommen

[wardy11, 29/05/2010] Our family spent 3 nights here last weekend in their family 5 room (last room avaliable). The rate £120 per night was very reasonable given the size of the room, 2 adults, 2 teenagers, location and room decor quality. Breakfast was plentifull and an excellent choice. Free wifi and free guest pc in reception. We came by train incidentally and got a fantastic rate by travelling slightly off peak Kings Cross / York family rail card £68 done...........
Carlton House offers a very comfortable stay, close walkin distance to everything you require with a friendly peacefull atmosphere.

[MissSammy, 30/04/2010] I have travelled to York several times now on business and stayed at other branded / chain hotels and find them in comparison to The Carlton House to be totally faceless and impersonal.
Having read the reviews on the Carlton within Trip Advisor I decided to move away from the mainstream and experience the personal touch that the Carlton claims to offer...I booked a double room (which turned out to be actually a double plus a single) for 2 nights Sunday 14th and Monday 15th as a valentines day treat for my partner and I...and I am extremely glad I did as from the minute we checked in I felt th

[normarl, 08/12/2009] This hotel was very inviting, small lobby / check in area but the sun room made up for the smallness in size. We had a delightful dinner in the restaurant. Local fare was ordered. Off the very small lobby was the even smaller (by proportion) two person / 2 very small bag elevator. Once inside you could not turn around, you exited the opposite way you entered. We opened the door to our room...yes, it was small, twin beds so close you could consider them together being a 3 / 4 full bed. The bathroom was, as you guessed by now, small with a huge towel warming bar and huge wonderful towels to go

[happysh2009, 07/12/2009] Advantages: Great food, good value and good service.
Disadvantages: the space is too small.
We first went to a Café Rouge when we visited York in September 2009. The main reason was we had a GBP10 voucher that could be used in a few restaurants including Café Rouge.
Café Rouge is a renowned French style chain of restaurants that opened its first outlet in 1989. Now it has over 90 across the UK. The one I visited in York is in the heart of the shopping area. It is approximately a 5-10 minute walk from York Minster as well as to Clifford's Tower and York Castle Museum.
