Description: Shambles (also known as The Shambles) is an important part of historic York, with the 15th century houses leaning into the centre of the street and almost touching at the top. It is York's oldest street and the best preserved medieval street in Europe, featuring many shops, restaurants and other tourist attractions.

The street was the area in which livestock was slaughtered and the meat sold in the butcher shops; in 1872, there were 26 butchers on the street, with the last remaining butcher being Dewhurst.
