It was during the 1976 excavations of the Coppergate area, that York's Viking roots were "revealed". The Lonely Planet Guide explain that it is with a lot of imagination and and skill that these "Danish murky depths" were "transformed" into this "popular" local attraction. The Guide warns that queues can be long!

The Lonely Planet Guide seems rather convinced by the exhibits and points out that in the summer you can witness "hairy locals" in complete "Viking kit" acting out battles and "successfully" bringing to life the "city's 9th-century Norse inhabitants".
