Vikings in York.
What is it? In the late 1970s well preserved remains of Jorvik, the Viking name for York, were uncovered. Over the top of the land where the excavations took place a centre was built to allow visitors to see Viking life for themselves. Jorvik Viking Centre
It was during the 1976 excavations of the Coppergate area, that York's Viking roots were "revealed". The Lonely Planet Guide explain that it is with a lot of imagination and and skill that these "Danish murky depths" were "transformed" into this "popular" local attraction.
