The secret shrine of The Saint Margaret Clitherow
I love to stumble upon places by chance and the Shrine of The Saint Margaret Clitherow is an example of one such place that I recently discovered. | Description: |
The Shrine of the The Saint Margaret Clitherow is a tiny medieval house in The Shambles area of York that from the outside looks like every other building on the street. Inside the building the front room has been fully converted into a church, complete with an altar. Margaret Clitherow lived in York during the 16th century. She was a martyr to the Catholic church and was murdered when her secret shrine was discovered in 1586. During times of persecution, after King Henry V111 had abolished Catholicism in England and formed the Church of England, she converted her home into a secret place of worship. She is often referred to as "The Pearl of York" and in 1970 she was Canonised by Pope Paul V1. Today her house is open to the public everyday from 9am and is free to enter. |
