Compiled for you: The facts!Details York City Walls

Description: The city of York is surrounded by several kilometres of ancient stone walls, many of these were originally constructed by the Romans, who built these walls to protect the city. These are the most intact walls and the best preserved example of their kind in England. They were heavily restored between the 12th and 14th centuries so the majority of them date from this period, but there are several areas of the original walls that still exist.
