What you would expect from a Novotel

Travel date: May 2008
Business trip
Breakfast only
Short trip (2-3 days)
Alone
The room was clean and reasonably comfortable. The restaurant had a good choice of both local and international dishes. It was good enough for a short visit.
  • I would expect neither a room of palatial size, nor opulence, from a Novotel, just something clean, functional and comfortable and that is pretty much what I got, The layout was standard four star hotel, with bathroom to one side, opening up into the main room. The bed was a fair sized double, which when I retired for the night proved to be surprisingly comfortable - or maybe it was the jetlag! There was a desk, with an accessble internet cable. The TV had both local and international channels. The cupboard had a sensible supply of hangers. The room was comfortable enough and clean.

If any complaint it would be about the bathroom which was a bit on the small side. The bath tub had a shower, the amenities were nothing special but functional, but the toilet felt rather cramped when seated.

    Lobby Atmosphere
  • Arriving at the airport there was a hotel car to meet me - I had prebooked this so it was not a surprise! The hotel itself is a reasonably modern building, neither ugly nor attractive.

Entering the hotel, there is a lounge and bar to the right. Directly ahead there is a long corridor, with some stairs up to the left, followed by the reception desk. Beyond reception, there is a travel agent, the lifts, and finally the entrance to the restaurant.

I was checked in quite quickly, my details and reservation were all correct and the check in staff were pleasant and cheerful. I had arrived in the late morning, they apologised that my room was not yet ready but within minutes it was.

I had a drink in the bar, sat in a comfy chair at one of the tables. There was little bar atmosphere as the bar is basically one side of the lobby, and it really did feel like a lobby lounge. However the waitress was pleasant enough and the drink was fine, but I would not want to spend an evening there!

  • I only ate in the main restaurant, which offered a buffet selection. At lunch there were salads, Indonesian dishes and international dishes including pastas. At breakfast there was a fair spread of cold selections, fruit, pastries and breads and eggs etc.

Apparently there is a European restaurant too but I didn't see it.

I had a drink in the atmosphericaly challenged lobby bar. There is also a bar by the pool but I didn't get to try it, sadly.

  • If you go to Yogyakarta, the chances are that you are going to see the ancient temples, such as Borobudur. The hotel is reasonably well located to be accessible to the temples, as well as the airport - about 20-30 minutes away.

The shopping opportunties are limited, though if you are after batik shirts or local souvenirs these can be found 15-20 minutes away.
