Dating from the 12th century, it was originally the rulers' residence and was expanded in the 18th century to include warehouses, a dungeon, harem, arsenal, mosque and facilities for military training as well as the incomplete Kalta-Minor Minaret.
The Kurinish Khan Palace, which included a manuscript repository and treasury, is also located within Kunya-Ark. Wood-carvings, sculpted plaster and mosaic tiles feature predominantly throughout the architecture and there is also a bathhouse which dates from approximately 1657 and features archaic underfloor-heating. The harem also served as a lookout tower and offers views of the city.
