Windermere Steamboat Museum

Compiled for you: The facts!Details Windermere Steamboat Museum

Description: Windermere has been a transport waterway since Roman times. The museum, situated on the bank of Windermere, houses a collection of vintage steam and motor launches which are moored in a dry dock. Founded by the Windermere Nautical Trust in 1976, it also conserves and restores historical vessels (including the S.L. Dolly which was salvaged from the floor of Ullswater.) It also has Beatrix Potter's rowing boat. There is a display of model boats on the museum's pond and exhibitions illustrating the history of the lake and also local author Arthur Ransome's book "Swallows and Amazons".

In quiet weather days in Summer, trips out onto Windermere by launch are arranged. The museum has a gift shop and tea room. There is free parking available at the museum and the site is accessible by wheelchair. Out of season opening can be arranged by appointment with the museum.
