Windermere has been a transport waterway since Roman times. The museum, situated on the bank of Windermere, houses a collection of vintage steam and motor launches which are moored in a dry dock. Founded by the Windermere Nautical Trust in 1976, it also conserves and restores historical vessels (including the S.L. Dolly which was salvaged from the floor of Ullswater.)
