Description: This is the last remaining authentic Whitby Jet Workshop. It was discovered by accident in the attic of a nearby building and moved to its current premises where it was fully restored.

It is known that this original workshop dated from 1867 and at that time it would have been one of several local workshops producing hand crafted ornaments and jewellery from Whitby Jet.

Whitby Jet is a black gem stone that is found in this area and it has been crafted into jewellery - especially mourning jewelery - for many centuries. The goods produced in this workshop are all produced by hand, using the original wheels and tools. There is a shop adjacent to the workshop where these finished goods can be seen and purchased.

Entry to the workshops is free. It is open daily from 10am until 5pm on Mondays to Saturdays and from 11am until 4pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
