Compiled for you: The facts!Details St Mary's Church

Description: Construction of St Mary's Church in Whitby began in 1110. It was built adjacent to the Abbey to provide a place of worship for the people that worked at the Abbey. The church today is remarkably well preserved considering that it has never been stripped or rebuilt, although some restoration work to the roof did take place during the 19th century.

Unusual features inside the church include 16th century box pews, which were rented out by families and had their names engraved onto them, an Elizabethan altar table, a rare three tier pulpit and the Cholmley pew, which was built in front of the chancel arch so that this wealthy local family could have the best view of the service.

The church is open daily throughout the year from 9am until 5pm. Admission is free but a small donation is suggested. There is a Sunday service open to all, each Sunday at 11.15am.
