[more]St Catherines’s Church is situated in central Vilnius, close to Square of Stanisław Moniuszko. The church was established by Benedictine nuns who arrived in Vilnius in 1622. The church was burned down by the Russians in 1655 and was rebuilt in 1703 under the name of St. Catharine. The church underwent several reconstructions in the period 1741-1773 directed by the architect J.K. Glaubitz. The church was seriously damaged in World War II and restored by the Soviet Government. The building features baroque style with rococo-style decorated bell towers.
In the recent years the church underwent extensive renovations which included the interior and the central altar. Since 2006 the Saint Catherine’s church has been managed and administrated by the Vilnius Teachers’ House organization. Due to the excellent acoustics the central nave of the church is used for concerts and rehearsals of the Šv. Kristoforo kamerinis orkestras (Saint Christopher’s Chamber Orchestra) and the choirs Jauna muzika (Young Music) and Ąžuoliukas (Little Oak).
