, 08/01/2007] This was one my most fun learning expirences. To start with it was very accesible. I stayed in a motel that is about half a kilometer from the entrance to the park. I simply unloaded my bicycle from the car and road it up the hill to the entrance to the park. It was a little harder getting back as the road is the main highway between Vicksburg and Jackson, the state capitol. It was perfect. At that time if one rode a bike to do the tour the entrance fee was waived. I am not sure if this policy is still in effect. Normally the rate is $8 a person or $25 for a car load up to six persons.

The events for the Vicksburg campaign "was one of the major decisive battles" in the war between the states. This preservation of history "commemorates and memorializes" what happened here in 1863. There are looping tours traversing both lines. One in fact goes "amid the trenches and emplacements". The two sides are "graphically shown with blue and red signs along the way". Moving along on the roads one sees "monuments throughout the park". Recovered from the mud of the Yazoo River where she was sunk the USS Cairo is "also in the park" a reminder of the naval participation in the siege of Vi

Tchoate rated Vicksburg National Battlefield as four of five stars. Vicksburg sits high on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. During the American Civil War this "was a major fortress guarding the supply route". The entrance to the park is an easy "one quarter of a mile off of Interstate 20". Vicksburg is "one of those places where you can see where the battle was and learn how the men lived and died". The siege occurred from March 29 to July 4, 1863.
