Gillette Castle is located in East Haddam in Connecticut, and I can thoroughly recommend a visit. This is a truly amazing place and was originally built not as a castle, but as a home for William Hooker Gillette, an actor who was most famous for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes. The Portland Observatory is located about 5 blocks from the harbour. It is built like an inland lighthouse and is a very interesting building. They offer walking tours of the building, which we did not feel was strictly necessary, as we could have done a self-guided tour just as easily.
